Evidence for an ethanolamine cycle: differential recycling of the ethanolamine moiety of phosphatidylethanolamine derived from phosphatidylserine and ethanolamine.
Evidence is presented for the operation of an ethanolamine-phosphatidylethanolamine (PtdEtn) cycle in Chinese hamster ovary cells. PtdEtn was labelled with [3H]ethanolamine and radioactivity was chased by incubation with 1 mM unlabelled ethanolamine. Radioactivity in [3H]PtdEtn gradually declined over a 23 h time period. In contrast, when the cells were incubated in medium lacking unlabelled et...
متن کاملQuantitative gas-liquid chromatographic analysis of ethanolamine, monomethyl ethanolamine, and dimethyl ethanolamine from lipids.
A method for the separation and quantitative estimation of ethanolamine, dimethyl ethanolamine, and monomethyl ethanolamine derived from lipids is described. After acid hydrolysis of the lipids, the bases are extracted from the neutralized hydrolysate with t-butonol and separated by gas-liquid chromatography.
متن کاملSchiff bases formed from retinal and phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylserine, ethanolamine or serine.
1. Conditions were established for the reaction of retinal with phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylserine, ethanolamine and serine in chloroform, ethanol or ethanol-water solutions to form retinylidene compounds, or Schiff bases. 2. The Schiff bases were reduced to retinyl compounds with sodium borohydride. 3. Absorption maxima and molar extinction coefficients were determined for the variou...
متن کاملSynthesis of phosphatidylethanolamine and ethanolamine plasmalogen by the CDP-ethanolamine and decarboxylase pathways in rat heart, kidney and liver.
Studies with mammalian cell lines have led to suggestions that mammalian tissues may derive all of their phosphatidylethanolamine (PE) from the decarboxylation of phosphatidylserine (PS), and also that the physiological significance of the CDP-ethanolamine pathway was the synthesis of ethanolamine plasmalogen. We have therefore investigated the biosynthesis of PE and ethanolamine plasmalogen vi...
متن کاملEthanolamine and Phosphatidylethanolamine: Partners in Health and Disease
Phosphatidylethanolamine (PE) is the second most abundant phospholipid in mammalian cells. PE comprises about 15-25% of the total lipid in mammalian cells; it is enriched in the inner leaflet of membranes, and it is especially abundant in the inner mitochondrial membrane. PE has quite remarkable activities: it is a lipid chaperone that assists in the folding of certain membrane proteins, it is ...
